Loco 569 Ontario

Class M 2 - Loco 569 has been running for more than 50 years now. Loco 569 " Ontario" was the first of fourteen engines purchased by the Ceylon Government Railways between 1954 - 1960 under the Colombo Plan aid package. The locomotive was built in Canada by General Motors. All but one is still in operation. Picture taken at the Dematagoda running Shed on 01.08.2009.

Viceroy Special

One of two only surviving steam locomotives of the Sri Lankan railway are now used as special Tourist Train known as the " Viceroy Special ". The photo was taken on 02.02.2011 near the Ambepussa Railway Station during a special run to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Viceroy Special.

Class M 6 - Loco 797

Built in West Germany and imported to Sri Lanka in 1979. These locomotive are still in operation. Picture taken on 05.07.2011 near the Kadugannawa Railway Station. The locomotive was hauling the morning Intercity train from Colombo to Kandy.

Class M 5 - Loco 779

Japanese built locomotives were imported in the 1980's is seen near Balana Railway Station on the main line hauling the Colombo - Matale Express. Photographed on 05.07.2011 by Ravindra during his rail hike between Kadugannawa and Ihala Kotte Railway Stations. He covered about 10 km through the jungle and village's along the rail track on this day.

Class M2 - Loco 797

The evening Intercity from Kandy to Colombo hauled by Loco 797 (Class M 2) passes a local train (Class W3) built in West Germany at the Ihala Kotte Railway Station. This streach of the railway line has only a single track and as such there are many crossings. Photo was taken on 05.07.2011.
