Caboose

The caboose functioned in many ways as the train's office. Often train orders and other paperwork were handled aboard the caboose, which came on the scene in the late 1800s to serve as a living quarters as well as an office for the crew. With the repeal of caboose laws that had mandated their use and since it was a non-revenue car, railroads discontinued its use in the 1980s.
